MARINA PEZ VELA [Quepos, Costa Rica] – The PELAGIC Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament Series rocked Costa Rica as the 2nd Annual Rockstar! Offshore Tournament saw 45 teams compete for over $300,000 with Team GAME PLAN taking home an impressive $107,070!
Reminiscent of The Kentucky Derby , forty-five fine-tuned vessels took their place at the ocean’s starting line to take part in sport fishing’s version of the prestigious race. In front of Marina Pez Vela, the warm, Pacific waters churned as varying sportfishers – large and small – jockeyed for position in anticipation of the iconic shotgun start. Grown men donned their neon mohawks and 80’s hair band wigs to the tunes of Guns ‘N Roses and Metallica while boat crews put the finishing touches on their heavy arsenal of tackle for the day. The air stood still – if only for a moment – before emergency flares shot to the sky signaled “It’s Go Time!” and throttles were pushed to full as each mechanical steed galloped towards the horizon. Put your bull horns up… that’s the way of The Rockstar! Tournament, baby…

This tournament hosted both a large (35’ and over) and small (34’ and under) boat category, with general divisions of: Billfish Release, Tuna, and Dorado. Over $300,000 in cash prizes were presented to teams for their performance in releasing the most aggregate billfish points (sailfish, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin) and/or weighing the heaviest two-fish total of each gamefish species (tuna & dorado) during the two-day tournament.

The event kicked-off in fine fashion on January 11th as forty-five teams with 243 anglers committed their entries and jackpot bets to the tunes of the Kin Rivera Rock Band playing live on the main amphitheater stage. Rockstar! Tournament Village was anchored by the recently-opened PELAGIC Flagship Store, brand-new to Marina Pez Vela’s unique, waterfront retail landscape. Here, tournament participants can find a giant selection of PELAGIC product including custom Costa Rica/Pura Vida apparel.

Teams could pose with the PelagicGIRLs with the option of using props from the “Rockstar! Photo Station”; food service was provided by Z Gastro Bar and Runaway Bar & Grill; while our friends and sponsors at Flor de Caña hosted an open bar for their fine selection of rum and other spirits.
